Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) is an NSE-listed stock with significant retail interest, but how you access it legally in India depends entirely on the channel you choose. Direct share trading happens through a SEBI-registered broker on the NSE, while international CFD brokers like Exinity offer derivative exposure with high leverage, which sits in a different legal category for Indian residents.

RVNL trades on the National Stock Exchange under the infrastructure and railways sector. It is a mid-cap name with high volatility, included in the Nifty Midcap 150 index, and frequently moves on railway capex announcements and new contract wins. The company pays dividends, though the yield is low-to-medium, so most of the interest is price-driven rather than income-driven.

The practical question for an Indian trader is which trading vehicle is actually permitted under local rules. Exchange-traded derivatives on RVNL are not offered, but direct equity delivery and intraday trading through SEBI brokers are fully compliant. Offshore CFD brokers, including Exinity, may offer RVNL as a CFD, but the regulatory picture for residents is different. Trading spot forex or CFDs with offshore brokers is not permitted under RBI/FEMA rules; residents are limited to INR-based currency pairs and permitted cross-currency derivatives on recognised exchanges. The same restriction applies to remitting funds abroad for margin forex trading, which is not a permitted LRS purpose.

RVNL Stock Basics

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited is a central public sector undertaking responsible for railway infrastructure projects. On the NSE, it is classified as a mid-cap stock with high volatility, which means daily price swings of several percent are normal, especially around contract announcements or budget news.

Key characteristics that define how it trades:

  • Sector: Infrastructure / railways
  • Exchange: NSE
  • Index: Nifty Midcap 150 (broad market inclusion, not a main flagship index)
  • Market cap: Mid-cap
  • Dividend: Payer, low/medium yield tier
  • Volatility: High

The stock is a momentum favourite. Retail participation is strong because railway capex themes generate frequent headlines. In practice, this means RVNL can gap up or down sharply on news flows, and intraday ranges are wider than in most large-cap names. Position sizing needs to account for that volatility.

Indian residents cannot simply open an account with any international broker and trade RVNL CFDs; the legal framework does not permit it. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) set clear boundaries.

The RBI Master Direction on Electronic Trading Platforms prohibits operating a forex ETP in India without RBI authorisation. The same rules restrict residents from trading spot forex or CFDs with offshore brokers. Verification of any platform's status can be done through SEBI (sebi.gov.in) and RBI (rbi.org.in). The RBI also publishes an Alert List of unauthorised platforms; as of 19 November 2025 the list totals 95 entities, and RBI states it is not exhaustive.

The compliant route is through SEBI-registered brokers on the exchange. Exchange trading is settled in INR with no domestic FX conversion, which removes currency risk from the equation.
WARNING
Trading CFDs or spot forex with offshore brokers is not permitted under RBI/FEMA rules. Remitting funds abroad for margin forex trading is not a permitted LRS purpose.

Exinity and CFDs

Exinity Group, the Dubai-HQ fintech holding, is the parent of FXTM and Alpari, and the standalone Exinity brand is UAE-focused. The group offers access to CFDs on global markets, including indices, metals, and equities. Indian residents are served through the offshore Exinity Limited entity in Mauritius, not through any standalone Exinity retail brand.

The licensing picture is specific: Exinity holds an FSC Mauritius Investment Dealer licence (number C113012295). There is no SEBI or RBI licence. For Indian residents, the offering sits outside the permitted framework under RBI/FEMA rules. This is not a matter of the broker being unregulated; it is regulated by FSC Mauritius, but that regulation does not cover India-specific legal requirements.

For context on the group's positioning:

  • Exinity Limited: FSC Mauritius, Investment Dealer #C113012295
  • Exinity Group: Dubai HQ, parent of FXTM and Alpari
  • Platforms: MT4 and MT5 (via FXTM)
  • Instruments: FX, metals, indices, commodities, CFDs
  • Base currency for India: USD; INR base account not verified

The offshore entity advertises high leverage, up to approximately 1:2000 on the Mauritius entity. That leverage is not available on SEBI-regulated exchange products, where margin requirements for currency derivatives are roughly 3-5 percent of notional value, around 20-30x.

What a Global Broker Offers

FXTM-branded accounts, which serve the Indian market for Exinity, provide access to MT4/MT5, tight spreads, and an Islamic/swap-free account option.

Tax treatmentNot locally definedPer Income Tax Dept rules

The trade-off is legal certainty. An NSE account has a clear regulatory framework, INR settlement, and defined tax treatment. An offshore account offers more leverage but operates outside the permitted structure for residents. The reported commission structure on Exinity's standalone product is approximately USD 0.20 per lot on FX/CFD with spreads from zero, and commission-free US shares, but this applies to the professional-facing Exinity Trader PRO account, which requires professional-client status and a minimum deposit around USD 10,000. For Indian retail clients via FXTM, terms are not verified.

GOOD TO KNOW
The standalone Exinity brand requires professional-client status with a reported minimum portfolio of ~USD 500,000. Retail access for Indian residents is through FXTM under the Mauritius entity.

The Less Shiny Side

The first issue is enforcement risk. Since offshore CFDs are not permitted under RBI/FEMA rules, there is no local recourse if a dispute arises. Capital repatriation could be problematic. The second issue is the leverage itself; at 1:2000, a small adverse move can wipe out the entire margin. The third is the lack of local payment verification; deposit and withdrawal terms for Indian clients are not verified at the time of review.

Tax treatment is also worth planning for. Exchange-traded currency futures and options profits are generally treated as non-speculative business income and taxed at individual slab rates. Intraday speculative positions are speculative business income, with losses set off only against speculative income and carried forward for four years. Non-speculative losses carry forward for eight years. The 20% TCS on LRS remittances above Rs 10 lakh per financial year, effective 1 April 2025, is an advance-tax credit, but it does not legalise the underlying purpose if the remittance funds an offshore margin account.

Residents must also declare worldwide income and foreign assets via Schedule FA in their returns. Even if an offshore account generates profits, those profits are taxable in India, and the account itself must be disclosed. The tax authority is the Income Tax Department/CBDT (incometax.gov.in).

Choosing Between the Options

If your goal is maximum leverage and global market access, an offshore broker like Exinity/FXTM provides that, with the risk that the account operates outside India's permitted framework. If your goal is to trade RVNL specifically, the exchange route through a SEBI-registered broker is the only fully compliant path, with lower leverage but clear legal standing.

The order of operations:

  • Open a DEMAT and trading account with a SEBI-registered broker (PAN is mandatory, Aadhaar for KYC, approval usually within 24-48 hours)
  • Fund via UPI, IMPS, or net banking; settlement is in INR with no FX conversion
  • Start with delivery-based trading in RVNL to learn the stock's behaviour
  • Only then consider whether leverage products fit your risk tolerance and legal position

Who it's for: a trader who already has a SEBI-registered account and wants an additional view of global markets, understands the regulatory boundary, and treats offshore exposure as a separate, clearly ring-fenced activity.

Who it's not for: a newcomer who wants to trade RVNL directly, or anyone who needs protection under Indian securities law. If you want legal clarity, local INR settlement, and defined tax treatment, a purely exchange-based approach is the appropriate choice.

Questions

Can I trade RVNL as a CFD with Exinity in India?

+

Indian residents cannot legally trade CFDs with offshore brokers under RBI/FEMA rules. Exinity's Mauritius entity offers CFDs on global instruments, and RVNL may be among them, but the channel is not permitted for residents. Direct RVNL trading on the NSE via a SEBI broker is the compliant route.

How is RVNL trading taxed in India?

+

Intraday RVNL trading is speculative business income, taxed at slab rates, with losses set off only against speculative income and carried forward four years. Delivery-based holdings held as investments are taxed as capital gains. Both require declaration in the annual return.

Is there a difference between trading RVNL on NSE and on a CFD?

+

Yes, a significant one. On the NSE you buy actual shares of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, settled in INR, with full legal protection. On a CFD you hold a derivative contract with the broker, in USD, without local legal recourse, and the position is not permitted under current RBI rules.
